Not in Talk but in Power

1 Corinthians 4:20 says, “For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.” Paul is contrasting the worldly “wisdom” of persuasive speakers and guides with the true heavenly wisdom that appears as “weakness” in the eyes of the world. He describes the power of God in this way: “When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we entreat.” These are not natural responses to being ridiculed or mistreated. They are evidence of the power of God transforming a heart. Disciples of Jesus display the power of God, not merely eloquent or persuasive words.
Use this as your litmus test—for both those you listen to and your own life. Are the primary guides in your life displaying evidence of transformed hearts? Is the power of God evident in your life? Has He so changed your heart that you can respond with blessing, endurance, and gentle appeal when being offended? Only by relying on His Spirit and abiding in Him can we display this power. May our lives be marked by the power of the kingdom of God in us!
